This workshop explores how to create black and white photographs and prints by using a digital workflow designed to optimize quality. Topics covered include conversion techniques using both Lightroom and Photoshop and digital toning methods that mimic traditional chemistry toning. Also discussed are 32-bit HDR shooting, post-production, and printing methods and hybrid film to digital print techniques. The digital printing process is covered in detail and you will have an opportunity to create, process and print your own images during the workshop in the RMCAD printing lab. Students should provide their own laptops and DSLR cameras. If you do not have any of these items please let us know we have a few that can be provided.

Printing paper is included in the workshop fee. There will be a one-hour lunch break each day.

About the Instructor: Frank Varney has been an active corporate location and fine art photographer, and a collegiate level photography instructor for over 30 years. He is Assistant Professor of Photography at the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design. He worked as an assistant instructor in 2013 and 2014 for the National Geographic Expeditions Wyoming’s Cowboy Country Photography Workshops. Frank holds an MFA in Photography from Maine Media College and a BA in Communication Arts from University of Denver. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including AARP The Magazine, ELLE, Glamour, First for Women, and Ladies Home Journal, along with The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes (by Christopher James, Delmar Cengage Learning, 2008) and Photography for the 21st Delmar Cengage Learning, 2006). He was also the Technical Editor for Perfect Digital Photography 2nd Century (by Katie Miller, Edition (by Jay Dickman and Jay Kinghorn, McGraw-Hill 2009).
